Ronald Wimberly:

Top,Oothon

Oothon is the focus of the William Blake’s poem, “The Daughters of Albion”. I don’t believe in explainig my pieces, but I’ll say this, “Oothon is my updated representation of Blake’s character from “Visions of the Daughters of Albion” The poem has inspired many interpretations, from a criticism of the American slave trade to a feminist allegory… and Oothon has been said to represent anything from the earth to the american revolutionary spirit (circa 18th century). I won’t say if any of that applies to the piece, but I’d be interested in what others think… I suggest that people read the poem and look at my piece in the context of the time… any conclusion you come to after that is great. Talk to me about it.

Bottom:Omphale

Less ambiguous than Oothon, Ompha!e is based on a myth. Hermes sold Hercules as a slave to a lydian”barbarian” queen, Omphale. In this illustration the clothing, ethnicity and sexuality frame a metaphor to American history and social dynamics that play out to this day.

I’d see comics magazines..."

“there would be several distributers of printed comics in the United States. I’d see comics magazines in bodegas, corner stores and drugstores. There would be an even greater proliferation of Japanese and European works available. There would be residency exchanges between countries for auteurs of the medium. There would be grants and residencies for artists working in the medium.
I’d see comic book artists on Charlie Rose. People of note would casually recall something they’d read in a recent issue of a comic book. Popular comics would regularly be a theatre for the discussion of contemporary issues via direct and indirect methods. I’d see comics criticism in comics themselves.
I’d like to see more copyright infringement without repercussions. Smart remixes that question the validity of the ideas in the original materials, new works that masterfully criticize old tropes.
Less conservative approaches to the format of comics. Less comics dogma.
There’d be a desegregation of genre comics, superhero comics, “comix” and art comix.
I’d see more artists wielding the medium as fine art and fewer fine artists mining comics’ aesthetics and culture to prop up weak, derivative work.
The footprint of Marvel and DC Comics on the American comic book shelves would be one weekly jumbo, Manga-like book, respectively; one large book would drop weekly, collecting several stories relative to their tent-pole story arcs (X-whatever book on the first week, Avengers book the next week, etc., respectively), and the narratives would be collected and colored at the end of their runs. The rest of the shelf real estate would be a diverse curation of mostly non-superhero works.
There would be a serious attempt to reach out to people of color. I’d see Fantagraphics publishing “my boring life” works from people of color. I’d see more non-white and non-cisgender comic book editors. I’d see comics left in cafés and subway benches, rolled up in the back pockets of thirteen-year-olds.”

- Ronald Wimberly’s vision of the comics industry (via swrd-play)

d-pi:

Little something I threw together for the homie Gabe Soria and his Dungeon Punk RPG, Sword and Backpack

SWORD & BACKPACK MIX #3 IS HERE

Click the link to start listening to the latest soundtrack for your Sword & Backpack adventures, another collection of heavy, psychedelic and straight-up awesome tunes that’ll steel your nerves for some grand adventure. Our original cover this time is provided by the amazing RON WIMBERLY, a longtime friend of Rothbard & Gazpus and all-around gentleman. You might have seen his work, well, everywhere. He’s prolific AND skilled. Go follow him and get blown away by his all-around awesomeness.

A couple of notes on this new mix: In general, this is a slightly spacier collection of tunes, covering everything from an Allen Toussaint cover of a Vince Guaraldi tune (which sounds to our ears like the perfect adventure traveling montage music ever), to some Krautrock, to desert instrumental jams, and everything in between. This time around we have TWO originals: “Mordor Brain,” where DJ Inbetween introduces Tolkien to Funkadelic and has a party, and “Summoning Sickness” a slice of psychedelic pie by the pseudonymic New Orleans-based space cadet Ero Lotus. Kids, you are in for an epic treat. (We’re putting together the downloadable version soon, so email us at rothbardandgazpus at gmaildotcom and we’ll send you a link when it’s ready.)

Occupy Comics #1 will be on shelves and we at Forbidden Planet recommend everyone get it. This is not only a comic that features the likes of Alan Moore, Art Spiegelman, David Lloyd, Charlie Adlard, Marc Andreyko, Kevin Colden, Molly Crabapple, J.M. DeMatteis, Joshua Dysart, Brea Grant, Joe Keatinge, George Krstic, Joseph Michael Linsner, B. Clay Moore, Steve Niles, Laurie Penny, Matt Pizzolo, Steve Rolston, Riley Rossmo, Douglas Rushkoff, Tim Seeley, Simon Spurrier, and Ben Templesmith. It’s not just a time capsule of radical ideas/stories for/about change. And, most importantly, its not just quick way for some people to make quick and easy money like some other comic publishers that shall remain nameless. DC. This is a book about one of the most culturally significant happenings in this country in a long time and whether you agree with its ideals or not makes it no less poignant. So in honor of this achievement in the choice of medium we have decided to peddle we will be having a signing with Dean Haspiel, Ron Wimberly, Ben Templesmith, Ales Kot, and Matt Pizzolo on May 22nd at 6:30pm. Come get your copy and get it signed by all these artists and writers who created something larger than themselves about a movement that was bigger than anyone anticipated. All proceeds from the book’s sales go to current Occupy initiates such as Occupy Sandy and Strike Debt. Read comics that matter.

Hey thanks for replying! ^^ I suppose I'll ask about your inking, I'm not really sure how to jump in with it coming from using whatever pens I find laying around and sharpies. Also I'm overwhelmed by your sense of space in a lot of your drawings and your foreshortening just blows me away. How did you learn to master the twists and the sizing of your limbs and body parts? As for particular piece I'll refer to Ninjaid01 Roxie and your Hipster Tengu. P.S. Prince of Cats is beautiful!

It’s good to start by using whatever pens. I use tools that make marks that I like; tools that work with my process.

If I’ve mastered anything it’s by not believing I’ve mastered anything. Draw Draw Draw. I look a lot at dead artists. For mark making, Hokusai is a favorite of mine. He’s a well known dude. His marks are great for describing forms without directly leaning on illusion and the marks themselves are usually beautiful. Plus he’s long dead so I don’t feel bad about studying him.

…and thanks for the love.
